    Affectionately named CLARA, the E. Claire Raley Studios for the Performing Arts provides studios and performance space for professional and community-based arts groups and a place for creative collisions and collaborations. As the newest cultural icon of the Sacramento Downtown Renaissance, CLARA already is rich in history — housed within the 100-year-old historic Fremont School in midtown Sacramento — and bringing to life the fearless spirit, love of the arts and culture E. Claire Raley passed down through generations of the Raley-Teel family. Rooted in the strong belief that arts are essential to the human spirit, fosters lifetime learning, and critical to economic development for the Sacramento region, CLARA also provides access to quality arts education in partnership with Sacramento City Unified School District. CLARA is currently the home of the Alliance Francaise de Sacramento, Brazilian Center for Cultural Exchange of Sacramento, Capital Stage, McKeever School of Irish Dance, Sacramento Ballet, and Sacramento Preparatory Music Academy.

    The longest continuously operating art museum in the West, the Crocker Art Museum was founded in 1885 and remains the leading art institution for the California Capital Region and Central Valley. The Museum, which is housed in one of the finest examples of Victorian Italianate architecture in the United States, offers a diverse spectrum of special exhibitions, events, and programs to augment its collections of California, European, and Asian artworks, and International Ceramics.  The Crocker nearly tripled in size when the Charles Gwathmey-designed expansion opened in October 2010.

    Founded in 1982, Harlow’s is Sacramento’s favorite entertainment venue, featuring prominent, nationally renowned musicians as well as acclaimed local acts performing in a casual art deco setting. From blues to soul to rock ‘n’ roll, live music venues don’t get better than this, with an excellent view of the stage from anywhere in the room and a spacious dance floor. The state of the art sound and lighting system in an acoustically mastered room guarantees a concert experience you won’t soon forget.     One of the most recognizable and beloved buildings in the region, the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium is listed on the National Historic Register. The auditorium was constructed in 1926 and opened in February 1927.  For eighty years the Memorial Auditorium has drawn audiences to a variety of events, from big bands and violin virtuosos to the Beach Boys and Rolling Stones. The Memorial Auditorium is a sentimental venue for the many thousands of graduates from regional high schools, colleges, and business and professional schools that hold their commencements each May and June in the building. It has lived up to its mission as a multi-purpose venue, as it still serves as the venue of choice for not only entertainment and sporting events but meetings, conferences, banquets, receptions, and speaking engagements.

    Sac Dance Lab is the city’s leader in adult commercial dance training. With a focus on urban styles and professional dance advocacy, Sac Dance Lab is a unique and boundless place to train for aspiring and professional dancers, as well as non-professional enthusiasts. Their classes are taught by industry leaders including NFL, NBA and commercial dancers from around California.

    Established jointly by independent art clubs, the Sacramento Fine Arts Center is dedicated to the creation and presentation of the visual arts. Offering classes, workshops, exhibits, and more, the Center is entirely self-supporting and operated by volunteers. Its operation is made possible by memberships, contributions, sales and rentals of art work, and numerous community fund-raisers. The Sacramento Fine Arts Center houses Northern California Artists, WASH – Watercolor Artists of Sacramento Horizons, and other organizations and groups.

    Since 1979, the Sacramento Poetry Center (SPC) has been a major force for literary artists in Northern California. Though primarily serving as the literary center for the greater Sacramento metropolitan area, SPC’s publications are recognized nationally for their quality and literary content and its annual writers’ conference has featured some of the most important poets of our time, including Pulitzer Prize winners. Unique among literary centers in that it is not affiliated with a university, the Sacramento Poetry Center, while maintaining close ties with the area’s universities and colleges, affords associated artists the opportunity to explore the medium unrestricted, empowering literary artists to improve their work and performance. The Sacramento Poetry Center is located within the R25 Arts Complex.

  • Sierra 2 Center

    The Sierra 2 Center for the Arts and Community, managed by the Sierra Curtis Neighborhood Association, is a charming, Andalusian/Spanish Revival style stucco building built in 1923 as an elementary school. Sierra 2 is located on three lushly landscaped acres in the beautiful Curtis Park neighborhood within easy reach of Midtown and Downtown Sacramento. Sierra Green, a neighborhood park, is adjacent to the Center. This historic site was saved from demolition by the Sierra Curtis Neighborhood Association (SCNA) in 1979. SCNA’s members and community volunteers generously contributed time and resources to renovate the school. Together they transformed Sierra 2 into a non-profit center for artistic, cultural, and educational activities. The 24th Street Theatre, three dance studios, and a variety of scenic meeting rooms and courtyards are available to the public for rental on an hourly, daily, and monthly basis. Sierra 2 has become a vibrant hub for Curtis Park and the greater Sacramento area.

    The Sacramento Comedy Spot, located in the MARRS Building, is pushing the envelope on Sacramento’s comedy scene. They feature hilarious weekly improv, sketch, and stand-up comedy shows you won’t see anywhere else in Sacramento, including Anti-Cooperation League–Sacramento’s longest running improv comedy show! The Sacramento Comedy Spot is also home to the most comprehensive comedy school in Northern California offering classes in improv, stand-up, and sketch comedy. They also bring successful comedians who have performed on television, movies, and respected comedy clubs to Sacramento to teach comedy workshops.

    Verge opened in 2009 as a private art gallery owned by Jesse Powell. It was hailed for its upscale approach to contemporary art, often compared with New York’s finest galleries. It was considered a leader in the Sacramento arts scene with national recognition. As Powell’s vision for the gallery expanded beyond the ability of the space, he gathered leaders from the community to help him build something even more exceptional. In 2010 VCA relocated to a 22,000 square foot warehouse in the heart of Downtown Sacramento. Recognizing Sacramento’s desire for a thriving contemporary arts center, Powell led the formation of a new, nonprofit venture that houses artist studios on site, provides expansive gallery space, features community education, and provides a one-of-a-kind printmaking lab.
