The Falcon’s Eye opens its tenth season with Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman’s You Can’t Take it With You. With its spirited defense of lives lived for sheer joy rather than for achievement, ambition, financial gain, or rank, this 1936 Pulitzer Prize winning play proved an escapist tonic in the midst of the Great Depression. The prototype for countless comedies about wacky families blithely out of step with the world around them, this giddy romp is a perennial favorite.
When Tony Kirby, the son of a straight-laced business family falls in love with Alice Sycamore the daughter of a wildly unorthodox and artistic family, a dinner is planned in an attempt to seamlessly weave the two clans together. Worried that Tony’s family might find her own a bit shocking, Alice goes to great lengths to ensure that her unconventional tribe is well-received. When the Kirby family arrives for dinner a night early, all bets are off and the true nature of Alice’s family is on display, inciting chaos and threatening the future of Tony and Alice’s union.
