In honor of the exhibition “Raymond Dabb Yelland: California Landscape Painter,” curator Alfred Harrison will talk about the history and work of this 19th-century painter. A visionary artist whose work captured the luminosity of California light, Yelland was highly influenced by Transcendentalist ideas, and his works give a sense of the spirituality he felt inherent in California’s natural landscape. Harrison, a renowned scholar, curator, and gallerist who has published widely on the work of early California artists, will offer a wider context for Yelland and his contemporaries who focused their work on the breathtaking natural world of California.
