Dave Stuart discusses “Native Peoples of the Delta: Indian Pioneers, Immigrants, Innovators, Freedom Fighters, and Survivors.”
Before Europeans arrived the east side of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta was the most densely populated region in North America except for Central Mexico, but it was divided into many, small, sovereign nations. This presentation will focus on these nations: the ancient “pre-history” of the Delta region; the complex ways in which Native nations cared for the landscapes and resources of their homelands; the “lifeways” of the Miwok- and Yokut-speaking nations of this region; Indian experiences with Europeans and Americans from their own perspective; the remarkable survival of traditional Indian cultures in this region.
