Bryan Valenzuela and Gale Hart both received their first major public art commissions this year at the highly anticipated Golden 1 Center. Shelly Willis, Director of the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission and the Golden 1 Center’s public art project manager will engage them in a conversation about their projects.
For more than a decade, Bryan Valenzuela has worked to perfect a unique drawing technique involving the atomization of the figure by carving out shape and light with handwritten text. His work for the Golden 1 Center, a large scale sculpture comprised of hundreds of hand-blown glass spheres, expands the core ideas of this work into a three-dimensional centerpiece in the arena’s atrium.
Gale Hart is a self-taught artist who has been showing her work throughout Sacramento since the early 1990s. Often she will incorporate sarcasm or humor in addition to nostalgia to create memorable artwork. Her project for the Golden 1 Center is no different. Hart has designed a series of large scale sculptures of giant darts, dart tails, and a terrazzo dart board and scattered them along L Street in front of the Golden 1 Center as a critique of games and sports.
