Making art that is exciting, challenging and thoughtful is the basis for Tavarus Blackmonster’s practice. In combining the methodologies of painter’s Peter Saul and Robert Colescott, Blackmonster creates detailed paintings and installations with a process practice and surreal and imaginative figuration. Delving and divvying the personal, political and proto-psychological, his work is a visual appeal to the challenges of saturating a public, democratic visual space. His concern is not in the potential meanings or rather, explanations regarding the visual relationships in his work but instead, the potential for multiple and open-ended conversations concerning the possibility within each composition.
“Formal Delinquent” represents two years of the artist’s practice. Since graduating the MA, Studio Art program at Sacramento State, in 2015 Tavarus Blackmonster has been placing the sickly sweet and colorfully grotesque in a counterpoint relationship. This exhibit represents both of these sensibilities under the guise of seductive imagery and over-saturation.
