Being a Refugee and Raising Bilingual Children

Join Afghan-American journalist Fariba Nawa as she talks about growing up as a refugee in America and her struggle to raise her children in a multilingual environment.

Fariba Nawa is an author, journalist, and public speaker. Currently based in Turkey, she was born in Herat, Afghanistan and spent her formative years there and in Lashkargah before relocating to California during the 1980s. A graduate of NYU and Hampshire College, she has written, traveled, and taught extensively, and her work has appeared in The Atlantic, NPR, The Christian Science Monitor, and the San Francisco Chronicle.

Note: Although the presentation will be primarily in English, Ms. Nawa speaks Farsi/Dari and will be able to take questions from those who speak Farsi/Dari.  Attendees who don’t speak English are welcome to bring an interpreter.
