Don’t let the name fool you, The Church isn’t affiliated with a religion. Instead, it is a prolific psych rock band known for bringing a psychedelic flair to new wave, post punk and dream pop. The band formed in 1980 and released their debut album Of Skins and Heart soon after. Major success came quick as they signed to major labels in the U.S., Europe and Australia. The band has fallen in and out of mainstream prominence, but they have consistently released music over its lengthy career — their most recent record being their 24th. The Church has been called “distinctive” and “ethereal.”
Their music has been described as “shimmering, exquisite guitar pop.” If The Church helped pave the way for modern dream pop, then those descriptors are the perfect representation of the band and the genre.
