Shimo Center for the Arts will be presenting the work of painter Sarah Flohr for her first solo exhibition Trade Wind. This exhibition is a rare occasion to see a group of Flohr’s paintings in Sacramento, as the artist has most often shown her work in Europe and Russia. Nine paintings will be exhibited, most works completed in 2016, with some pieces from 2012 and 2013.
The paintings in the exhibit touch upon her interest in allegory and its long historical force in paintings such as Bronzino’s “Venus, Cupid, Folly and Time.” While not tied explicitly to an allegorical language at the outset of each painting, a narrative unfolds and unwinds slowly and reciprocally to reveal a world both still and in flux.
Sarah Flohr lives and works in Sacramento. Her work has been shown internationally in Germany, France, and Russia. She has been awarded several grants such as a Fulbright Fellowship, and a grant from the Akademie Schloss Solitude. Flohr was the recipient of the Winsor Newton Limited Prize for Excellence in Painting from Yale University.
