The English Beat

Also known as just “The Beat” over in their hometown of Birmingham, U.K., the 2-tone ska band helped revitalize the genre along with new forms of reggae and new wave in the early 1980s. Wakeling, along with the band’s former toaster (rapper meets hype man) Ranking Roger, released their debut album in 1980, and would go on to introduce ska themed singles to pop radio including “Mirror in the Bathroom,” “Too Nice To Talk To,” “Hands Off She’s Mine” and the always popular “Save It For Later.”
